Kindling Flames Flying Sparks The Ancient Fire Series Julie Wetzel 9781634220156 Books Reviews
The character development in this series is great, and the story is also really good. I'm enjoying the series.
There are quite a few misspellings/wrong word choices, but from the author note at the end it is apparent that she's somewhat untrained, so perhaps just another good edit would do the trick.
The only thing that really bothers me about this book is the ending. There's a part involving two wizards(????) that makes very little sense. They're brought up earlier in the book as former lovers (not magical in nature) of Vicky, but that's it. It feels like there was a subplot that got cut everywhere else, or wasn't fully developed, but got left in the end just to tie things up.
It left me scratching my head.
I got the first book for free, and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Sometimes, I don't mind that - and I still won't buy the next book.
But I liked this story, and I liked the characters. Vicky is a nice girl, a normal girl, who handles odd situations with compassion and composure, more or less. Sure, there are a few editing issues, but they were minor, and the story kept me entertained. I wanted to see what happened next, so I bought the whole series. I've already read the first book twice - going back through to see what clues I missed.
I like the interactions between the supernatural groups, including the Wild Hunt and the hellhounds. I wanted to know more, and wanted more background. So, I'll keep reading.
I was disappointed in this book especially after paying 3.99 for it. We never actually see the chemistry between the H and h and I wasn't a fan of how Darian is so cold towards Vicky at times regardless of his inner thoughts being the opposite. There isn't any passion between them. I like the storyline and I'm curious to read more about this paranormal society so I bought the 3rd book. The writing improved in the 3rd book and I'm glad it did because 5.99 is more than I usually pay for an ebook that I haven't heard much about. I'm not sure if I will read the 4th and 5th books because they are shorter and cost 5.99 as well.
The first book in the series was free and I enjoyed it. I decided to try the second book to resolve the cliffhanger of the first. After finishing it, I was disappointed that I spent $3.99. The book was short, yet quite slow. I can't imagine how much shorter it would have been if scenes weren't so drawn out. The twist at the end felt goofy to me. I can't think of any way to explain it further without giving away spoilers. There were also some editing issues that I would not have expected for a $3.99 e-book. Looking at the other books in the series, I see that they are listed at $5.99. That's far too steep of a price for an e-book, especially one that doesn't give me a burning desire to continue with these characters. If you enjoyed the first book for free, I would advise proceeding with caution before paying for this book and continuing with the series. Given the price of the rest of the series, I plan to stop with this one and I won't lose any sleep wondering what happens next.
So I wasn't sure if the second could book could keep up with the first . There were a few scenes that were incorrect , like when you watch a movie and the door is open only a second later it's closed. Yeah I catch those things and they drive me nuts . But altogether another spectacular journey . Loved the new twist on the hell hounds .I'm not saying more because it's a spoiler . Again I was kept laughing , yelling , and no waying through the book. Just a fun read. I love the humanity and how humble the characters are . Strength is not only a physical form, it's the psychological and this blended both
I had hoped with this second installment that the chemistry between Darien and Vicky would pick up. I had also hoped for more background on Darien and some of the secondary characters. I got neither one. This is as far I go. Why? Let me count the ways
1) As before, I had hoped the relationship between Darien and Vicky would deepen further and other than ER visit, the visit of the fire demon from time to time, I still didn't feel the chemistry between these two sparked at all. Other than these two admitting to themselves they are in love with the other and naked shower (not together), this might as well be rated PG-13 and anyone under 18 can read this. Heck, you could do away with the shower scene altogether and just call this novel a fantasy, not paranormal romance. My mom could read this and not be fanning herself (she's 62).
2) Speaking of fantasy, there is more of that in here than anything else. There isn't a whole lot of romance, unless you count a cursed dress and if you're interested in delving into this fantasy realm where creatures of the night come alive, then this is the book for you. If all you want is just a tale of how a human falls into this realm and becomes a part of it with a hellhound providing comic relief with a misguided fire demon thrown it from the first book, well, this book is for you
3) Jumbled plot. I had completely forgotten who Alex and Trevor were in the story that when it came to the end, I had to go all the way back in the book to remember who these two were. These two were barely mentioned in passing as part of Vicky's past and when you never hear of them again until the end, I was left dumbfounded and confused. Why have an army of demons when you have one fire demon causing all the trouble? I don't get it.
4) Slow pacing. I really didn't need to read all the waiting at the penthouse by the paranormals for the fight to begin. It was nice to see all the previous groups getting along finally and actually having fun. I didn't even mind the Zac's penchant for ruining clothes and scaring the delights out of most of the houseguests. What I minded was how much of the middle of the book was devoted to just that, waiting at the penthouse. Could we not have had Vicky learn more about the wolves? Darien himself and the lady in the picture? Maybe even the Fae? What they can and can't do? How about delving further into the other character's pasts? I would like to know more about how Elliot met Darien or Rupert. I got none of this
I could go on further, but I won't because there are just too many questions that didn't get answered. At the end of the second book, I didn't feel the need to want to read the next one even though this one didn't end in a cliffhanger. This was like watching a soap opera deliberately drawn out but had main characters I no longer cared about because almost nothing happened between them other Vicky's life was in danger and Darien needs to save her. You would think after having almost lost Vicky twice Darien would have claimed her by the end of the book, but no. Safe to say I lost my enthusiasm for this book and wasted $4. Won't waste my time with rest of the series.
Well written. It kept my interest and had me wanting to the next book. Thanks.
